Regarding the dirty song: I didn’t know it. People can correct me, but my sense is that in the US, when a song is used as cinematic shorthand for “a sex is happening now,” it tends to be “Love to Love You Baby” by Donna Summer, I think. Because moaning.

Oh, if you would do me the honor, please listen to this particular episode of my brother @cmolanphy.bsky.social Chris’s podcast “Hit Parade,” which is all about the music of the 60’s: reality vs. myth, as reflected on the Billboard charts:

I had an unexpected rush of nostalgia when you referenced Eden Kane…. for the beginning of the series! Perhaps feeling angsty for the impending finale? (Well?! I ask you…)

I’d never heard of it until it was brought up on an American Beatles podcast as being the inspiration for Sun King, as you discuss on the episode. (I’m American, fwiw, GenX)

Just listened to Beacon theatre ‘76 on the GD Sirius channel… they were teasing RSD, I guess it worked!

The Tommy J “I Think We’re Alone Now” is my jam… I grew up only knowing the Tiffany version until I heard the original on our local oldies station and it was 🤯

Ah yes I noticed there was a different version with a UK narrator on YT as well! I like that it seems to be a longer edit with extended interviews, but on the other hand I miss Liev Schreiber’s narration!

Check out particularly the interview with the Shirelles where they reminisce about their record “Sha La La” being knocked off the charts by the Manfred Mann cover.

Of particular interest (and poignancy) I think is the section near the end of the episode that deals with the effect of the British Invasion on the homegrown American Black music that had been previously topping the charts.

It’s extremely difficult to watch nowadays because of American song licensing issues, and will probably get pulled from YouTube presently so watch it while you can.
