It’s a Unix tool, so possibly? I don’t have access to a Mac to know for sure. Poking Google suggests you can get it for OS-X, even if it’s not there by default.

I find the command line tool “file” is handy for identifying what a file actually is.

One of the huge advantages of controlling both the hardware and the operating system is that you know exactly what configurations to expect. It makes handling upgrades a lot easier.

The downside is lack of choice on the user side; but people that need that aren’t Apple’s market.

Most so called "digital natives" don't use computers regularly, they use their phones. Most people know us much about how their tech devices work as your average driver does about how the internal combustion engine in their car works.
