In this chapter, I show that Sir Thomas developed his apprenticeship as a merchant in Andalusia in the 1550s, as evidenced by notarial documentation from the Archivo Histórico Provincial de Cádiz (Cadiz, Spain), which shows his service to James Morley, his master in the guild.

who became Lord Mayor of London and governor of the East India Company in 1603 and 1604.

In this publication, I place Andalusia within the debate on English commercial apprenticeship during the 16th century. I equate this area with what Flanders meant for English merchants who were members of the London Livery Companies.
