OTD: April 18th, 1912 - RMS Carpathia arrives in New York with her passengers & Titanic’s survivors. It is said that some 10,000 people gathered in Battery Park to watch her come up the river.

Carpathia docks at Cunard’s pier 54 & survivors begin disembarking around 9:30pm.

OTD: April 11th, 1912 - RMS Titanic makes her final stop in Queenstown, Ireland around 11:30am. She would pick up 123 passengers and nearly 1,400 sacks of mail here before heading out to open sea.

Waiting for the big day!

April 9th, 1912 - Final preparations are still underway in Southampton for Titanic’s maiden voyage.

Fixtures are still being installed, walls are still be painted, and furniture and provisions are still being brought on board.

Titanic’s forward anchor crane/derrick was used to deploy her auxiliary anchor. It was held in place to point aft, but on the wreck it points forward. Some have speculated how it managed to spin around 180 degrees, but we will never know for sure. It continues to be one of many enduring mysteries.

Titanic’s masthead lamp, as seen on the wreck during an expedition in 1987. The lamp has since been recovered and can be seen on display with other artifacts.
