History Matters episode 290:

Change comes from the bottom up.

This election showed that.

What we saw in part, was Americans of all kinds who said this is our moment to speak up, we’re going to vote against it.

People were voting for and against things. 1/

The Presidential Wrecking Ball and Why it Matters

The White House is a symbol. It is not the president’s house. It is our house.

Seeing the ravage is a metaphor for this political moment. 1/

History Matters #287

Why do protests matter?

1️⃣They fuel the energy of resistance.

2️⃣It shows everyone in government and outside of government that there are mass numbers of people who don’t like what’s going on. 1/

History Matters #286

The Rule of Law matters:
It has to do with We the people,
No one is above the law.

There needs to be speaking out about what is lawful, what is right, holding people accountable.

If we don’t [speak out], the lawlessness is normalized. 1/

Declaring your enemies as “enemies from within”--
that kind of language is blatantly dangerous, blatantly undemocratic.

Ultimately one of the things at the heart of democracy is dissent, disagreement.
There isn’t only one way to see things. 1/

How a president behaves, shapes a national reputation to an extreme degree.

But it's not the only thing.

The full reputation of a nation is bound up in us, not just the president. 🗺️

The honor of a nation is its life. Deliberately to abandon it is to commit an act of political suicide.” - Hamilton

Displays of resistance matter.

They show that resistance is possible.

It shows you are not alone

They show that there is a We, a big group of people who don’t like what’s going on.

Those in power can see that there is resistance and other people can see it as well.

It does a lot of good. 1/

Today I asked my history tadpoles: Did the government help you get here today? Most said no.

Ss shared morning routines-recalling breakfast was a fave! 🥓 🧇 🥟 😋

Then we and discussed how the govt was involved. Students were surprised to discover govt’s active role in their lives. 🗺️
