Warlike. Unyielding. Queen of England.
This 1460s medal by sculptor Pietro da Milano captures Margaret of Anjou - Henry VI’s fierce consort during the Wars of the Roses. The AI illustration reimagines her, aged 30, using the haunting profile.

Panoramic view of Towton battlefield (1461) taken in 1976. I patched this together from single shots before iPhones and the like. It shows the full extent of the Yorkist position seen from the Lancastrian lines beside the memorial cross. Tempus fugit.

#OTD 1483 👑👑. Richard III and his wife the Lady Anne, by Edwin Austin Abbey, 1896. Always liked this painting, but it still fascinates me how the ‘Shakespearian Richard’ has always crept into art and media over the years. No wonder we have the wrong idea of his real character.

As a medievalist, I found this article very interesting. Increasing inequality; the privatization of infrastructure, security, finances - we’ve seen this before. Are we headed for a new feudal age? Or are we already in it! www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc...

I love a good map. Spot the battles…

The battle of Stoke was the last major battle of the Wars of the Roses. It was a victory for the Earl of Oxford & Henry VII ‘in absentia’. But is this really where the elder surviving Prince in the Tower (Edward V) died fighting #OTD in 1487?

Computer (AI) says no 🧐 typically!

Thank you for the great review David Grummitt…

‘Boardman has provided an extremely valuable survey of the Kent rebellion in the autumn of 1470 and Fauconberg’s Rebellion of 1471. A very good, and a much-needed, history of this aspect of the Wars of the Roses’
