A PT recently said:

"PTs should be in shape - despite what woke society tells you."

Beyond this incredibly problematic statement, it is the paying customer who decides what shape their coach should be in.

Which is why PTs of every size, shape, age, colour and creed have thriving businesses.

A coach I follow recently said the following:

"A PT should be in shape - despite what woke society tells you."

🤦‍♂️

The client selects what shape they want their coach, and that is why PT's come in all shapes and sizes.

Can you imagine what it's like to go from hating exercise to creating some of your fondest adult memories in a gym setting?

Excuse me while I get emotional.

Yes, I can. because I've been seeing it happen for the last 20 years and i can't believe it's my job. 🖤

A large percentage of my clients are doctors, nurses and teachers.

These are among the most stressful jobs out there.

Why do they come to me?

I take some decisions off their hands and provide an escape for at least 60 minutes.

And I'm much more fun than a dead body.

I love exercise tutorials that basically say:

"And if you remember these 37 things simultaneously, you MIGHT perform this exercise without dying."

Way to fill people with confidence guys!

OH WAIT, YOU WANT DEPENDENCY.

Sorry, I forgot.

One of the biggest things people forget when training beginners:

Coaching how they should move BETWEEN exercises.

Like, putting a hex bar away is hard!

A PT I'm mentoring asked if you should always be educating your clients.

Here are my thoughts:

It depends.

Exercise is a very precarious habit when what is classed as "adulting" begins

- kids
- greater job demands
- kids
- relationships
- an ever increasing demand on time

Helping people navigate this one of the most powerful things you can do as a coach of non-athletes.

When do I use singles or single rep sets in my coaching?

1) when lifting a new weight during a big compound exercise like squat, bench or deadlift

2) for powerlifters who compete in a single rep sport

3) for hypermobile people or people who are struggling to focus on high rep sets

4) testing

If you can squat ass to grass without any additional weight, but suddenly squat high when you have a barbell on your back...

You don't have an ankle mobility issue.

You have a strength and/or fear problem.

Deep, loaded squat and leg press variations will help you more than a 45 min ankle stretch.

Many Personal Trainers struggle with when they should present their prices.

Do it as early as you can.

Then you don't spend the rest of the consult process worrying about it.

Your consult doesn't spend the whole time worrying about it.

And the whole consultation period is more enjoyable for all.

The fitness industry is backwards.

It's all over-promising and under-delivering.

This is why you'll never see me promise results or no injuries or similar.

You'll never see me promise "big things" from a lifter because this adds greater weight of expectation.

UNDER-PROMISE.
OVER-DELIVER.

I have a hypermobile ADHD client who has had a couple of other coaches.

She was given separate warm-ups to her actual sessions, which were 20 minute stretching/mobility work.

Below, I'll explain why that was probably wrong.

Just thought of the perfect glute training program title to fit my brand (almost)

As we approach 2025, I can only hope mankind realises that no-one cares about your daily ice bath.

Gyms are changing.

They are far more important for connection, anti-loneliness, friendship and relatedness than ever.

And this is why there has never been a better-time or more important time to be an in-person coach.

Powerlifters need differing amounts of variation.

If you crave variety, colour, and new things, you'll need more or you'll hate powerlifting within 2 years.

If you crave routine, you'll prefer keeping your training very samey and may be able to train in the same way for years and love it.

Don't want your strength to recede as fast as your hairline?

Hi, I'm The Heavy Metal Strength Coach.

Why are junior powerlifters getting insanely strong?

1) more people doing it!
2) accessibility
3) gyms are the new hubs of community
4) increasingly straight-edge culture promoting recovery
5) better training, coaching and handling
6) roids

One of the most underrated results from in-person coaching?

Lower loneliness.

This will improve more health markers than any increase in deadlift 1 rep max.
