Syria’s transition is fragile. Brutal violence erupted in recent months. We must back economic recovery, civil society, & transitional justice. The coming months will determine whether Syria takes credible steps towards democratic transition or not. (6/6)

Beyond institutional reform, the authorities’ responsibilities are #security, economic #recovery and #accountability. Commissions have been formed and promises made. Now implementation, transparency and stronger civil society involvement must follow. (5/6)

The new legislative authority is tasked with preparing an #ElectoralLaw and laying the groundwork for proper elections in 2.5 years. With no #parties or #opposition yet allowed, this step is key. Elections have to follow, political parties need to be allowed. (3/6)

119 seats were up for election, #al-Sharaa can now appoint the remaining 70 members, which will shape the final composition of the assembly. His choices will show whether #inclusion is really the goal or loyalists will dominate the parliament even more. (2/6)

#Syria held its first (s)election since #Assad's fall. Only 6 women and less than a dozen minority representatives were chosen by electoral colleges; power stays with al-Sharaa. What happens next will determine, if it was still a step in the right direction. (1/6)

Families in #Israel mourn the victims of October 7, while hostages remain in captivity, enduring hell. Families in #Gaza cannot grieve, more bombs are falling & settlers terrorise those in the West Bank. This violence needs to end. But 🇪🇺 responsibility does not stop with a deal.
