Interesting new Statistics Canada paper on firm sizes and the Canada-U.S. productivity gap. Shows most of our gap is due to Canada having more small firms (less productive). But most of the widening gap is due to large firms lagging.

JMP Abstract: Title: Consumer responses to novel risk information: Evidence from an experiment in urban Kenya Authors: Vivian Hoffmann Sarah Kariuki Mike Murphy∗ November 21, 2025 Abstract Foodborne illness is a global public health problem, comparable in magnitude to malaria, whose burden is heavily concentrated in developing economies where regulatory capacity is limited. Since contamination is not observable, consumers cannot differentiate between higher and lower risk options. We test the impact of an experiment in which consumers receive information on the risk of contamination with a fungal toxin in formally and informally produced maize flour. We find a 47 percent increase in the share of households consuming the lower-risk product at follow-up in the treatment group relative to the control group, from a base of 38 percent. Our results demonstrate the potential for public surveillance and risk communication to shift demand towards safer product options where regulatory enforcement is weak.
