not Frank Lantz on formalism? I do remember a furore around a bit in that that was like "also why does every game have to have so many fucking dragons in it, is everyone twelve" (I paraphrase). this may also have been when people kept saying "ludocentrism"

many have said yes; but also, many have -- for a variety of reasons! -- said no!

maybe it's because bluesky still mostly feels like people grumbling in corners at a conference, rather than performing their opinions for The World

Ohhhh interesting! Yeah my email is just fully online on my website but I’ve never applied for funding as a writer, only as a curator or game maker

interestingly the ones with the sidelong threat are usually the ones that mention the Bernie De Koven book I worked on, I guess suggesting that academics are more paranoid on average

apparently some of the "book clubs" even have bot-filled discords just to demonstrate that they absolutely exist

but I do get quite regular "well... I see you don't have a wikipedia article about you... and yet are you not NOTABLE? perhaps I could WRITE ONE FOR YOU for a SMALL FEE... after all it would be a shame if someone ELSE who does not have your best interests at heart were to write one, would it not"

I think often of a woman in the sea at Margate coming up to me, also in the sea, and saying “wasn’t this… deeper yesterday?” and exactly how far I got in my attempt to explain tides before I realised I was out of my depth (metaphorically, not literally, it was indeed quite shallow at the time)

Yes it’s true that there are many things I have a vague sense of understanding but couldn’t put into words and probably don’t actually get

Look I’m happy to draft a few possible explanatory notes if you can look into the time machine

Like, their distance from it almost makes it easier to abstract. It’s just like us reading the footnotes to an annotated Love’s Labour’s Lost and going “okay sure this character is making fun of some tedious writing guys who liked using very fancy words, okay cool”
November 29, 2025 at 12:35 PM
Idk I kind of think it would be fine! Just footnote it! People are always all “imagine trying to explain the flag museum tweet to a medieval monk” but I reckon you could do it!

it IS, isn’t it. It feels like there’s gotta be some Spectator article or equivalent about how eg automatic curtains let everyone know you don’t have a valet, but I don’t know how you’d find it

Not really the same thing but I did once see an argument that wheels on luggage were embarrassing because they implied you’d be carrying your own suitcase

Yeah, might be the way to go to polish off the ones I'm already reading, at least!

yes!!! the correct move! I should have done that, and intended to, but I left it to the last minute and misremembered the cutoff so I have, like, thirteen files for books that I have either since finished reading or will probably never get round to
November 13, 2025 at 12:54 PM
I believe amazon stopped letting you download backups earlier this year, so there's no way of getting them into calibre! BUT if I'm wrong about that, due to the nature of bluesky I guess someone will correct me soon and then I'll learn something
November 13, 2025 at 12:53 PM
I will say the list of books I'm technically in the middle of makes me look like a much fancier reader than I am, because all the "!!!! guess what happened next" books I read fast and then all the "thoughts a French person had once" books I go through at a rate of max three small thoughts per week

As I understand it was always difficult to get books off of kindle to transfer to anything else, and earlier this year it became much harder - from a bit of googling it *might* still be possible if you have an old enough kindle and do enough fancy computer stuff, but I think it's a bit much for me!
November 13, 2025 at 12:40 PM
I tend to have lots of books on the go at once so the weirdest ones are the books I'm technically reading right now. Sheila Heti's "Alphabetical Diaries", which I already had on paper but I drifted off a lot while reading; easier in ebook. I'm enjoying it!! but enough to buy it a *third* time?

thinking of it like the piles of books I left behind in Australia, though at least then I got to have a garage sale (where a second-hand bookseller who had previously cut the line directly in front of me at a library sale scooped up a third of them; still slightly regret refusing to sell to him)
