Gosh, that takes me back. Blickling was my Regional Office when I was Head Warden at Hatfield Forest, back in the 1980's! I suddenly feel rather ancient....

Sadly, I think disturbance is the most likely cause. The big increase in walkers, runners, and mountain bikes over the last 30 years, close to their breeding ground, is a likely factor. The ground habitat has not really changed.
