This is on by default. It lowers enemy stats every time you hit retry (just for that single fight).

Hard Mode is a different new set of fights. It's basically part 2 of the door. You will want to do that.
Also the Fool's Emblem was a drop from Gilbert and not a reward for first time clear so you can actually go back and get more if you want (they're REALLY good).
