As an Austin native with grandparents from every corner of Texas, I don’t recall ever hearing it pronounced without the L and don’t know what NYT is talking about (and on the same day Spelling Bee says “Bailee” is not a word!)

They must have confused an audience for gossip about her for an audience for her. There seems to be a large audience for the story, approximately 0% of whom want to give her money or spend time with her.
