Versicle and Response (V+R) is the ancient prayer-rhythm of the west. I’m borrowing that flow for this work and making sacred-smelling things for folks who don't want to have to encounter institutional Christianity. The welcoming are welcomed.
Finally! I understand what I've been trying to do for which "candle" has been only a clumsy metaphor.

Vigil lamp oil. These infusions I make don't need to be translated. They just need a bowl and a floating wick.

I made an oil I was working on too complex for the beard, which was its intended use, but probably just right as an oil for anointing icons.

Did open the apothecary back up yesterday. 85 incense sticks (frankincense + cedar) and ~12 oz of wax melts (sandalwood + rose).

Ugh I really need to stink up some anointing oils and wax melts today, but I have had *ZERO* success self-motivating since 12/26 so there's that

I'm doing a gift bag for all my co-workers. Wax melts (frankincense + myrrh and also benzoin+vetiver) and a room spray (orange + clove).

Headed to a place called “Hexe Haus”. Hope to get my hands on some raw sandalwood.

I dare not hope that maybe someone will know something about incense making and tell me why my dried citrus peels aren’t really contributing anything to my blends except more smoke…

And yet hope insists in me.

Frankincense oil got strained today. What a mess! But we got a whole 16 oz of oil, and then the face scrub, too. Smells and feels great.
November 24, 2025 at 5:52 PM
FWIW, this is the frankincense oil recipe I'm using that also yields a face scrub. As I said to my mom, "...it’s nice to hear her accent, too, while watching someone do stuff that’s adjacent to what I’m trying to do."

As I was raised (by her), baptists just don't.

_Canticum_cantorum_ fragrance blend: patchouli, labdanum, clove, oud

Intended to invoke epithalamion

Getting ready to do a big frankincense oil infusion. I’m told that when the oil is finished rendering, the grindings of this resin will become a rich, nourishing face scrub.

🎉First commission fulfilled!🎉

It contains:
• Frankincense-Benzoin resin blend (drawstring #1)
• Frankincense-Bergamot wax melts (drawstring #2)
• 2 oz sample of lavender-epsom milk bath (silver cap bottle)
• Frankincense anointing oil (½ oz dropper)
• Sandalwood-Rose pulse point rollerball (10ml)

I confess that I'm very disappointed that, to my sense, dehydrated orange rinds do not add anything significant to an incense blend. Everyone says so, but it just smells like something burning to me, not citrus.

The syringe available to me was for infant meds, so it's bigger than a lot of my bottles, but it’s very helpful when it works. Otherwise, I also got a dropper for baby medicine that can hold up to 5ml, and a spoon that holds 10ml. Very cheap equipment. Very effective at my current batch level.
It occurs to me that a syringe will measure fragrance oil in ml, which is much easier than counting drops 😜

Better than wondering “what did I do?” on stuff in progress, I guess.

(I have better tools, but apparently refuse to use them until [whatever] is done.)

Your CRAFT doesn't need to have any sense to others, but you and your pantheon.
Your individual connection with it, is something you can see, feel, and explain.
And it is not your work making it easier to understand for any outsiders.

Wish I could tell my younger self: when you think there’s nothing left for your ears or eyes, your sense of smell is going to bring you back to life.

A new hobby is a real temptation towards capitalism.

I'm poor, so trying to make my own stuff as much I can and not shop, but I did have to get a food dehydrator so I can make my own dried herbs and rinds for incense blends. My toaster oven is too hot to dry things slowly enough to retain scent.

I got some oud oil today, and I'm just... out of my mind with love for it.

Between this and benzoin resin, I'm *sooo happy.*

Egyptian Amber + Patchouli + Labdanum is more like a pagan temple than a sacristy, so it's not *precisely* my brand, but I might be willing to stretch...

I'll make Fr/M + palo santo + sandalwood incense, expecting this blend to go in my gift pack to donors. I think this will introduce the project well.

I haven't decided if I will unify the package (candle, incense, oil, bath milk), or if I will opt for variety and personalization. #altarcore

If you need blotter paper, but don't have dedicated budget for it, an old manila folder cut into strips does good work.

I worked a funeral on Saturday. A sister of the grieving said, "When I got these bottles, I thought of you. They all have cork tops. Take a few and use them for what you're doing."

So I've got 4 of these that I'll use for my bath milk experiments. (Suppose I should dry the flowers too.)

I’m glad to know that it is possible to make incense without DGP, using only essential oils. BUT. I’m interested to know how much more scent throw I will get using it to blend the fragrances.
Testing incense sticks. Top to bottom:
- Sandalwood + Rose
- Sandalwood + Fr/Myrrh (pre-blended)
