They didn’t trade for him, they acquired him off waivers. Basically, thanks to their bad season last year, the Braves were able to put in an early claim and get a leg up over other teams for his free agency.

Revenue sharing should pay for a “Bird Rights” or “Franchise Tag”, where the team that drafted the player can have the league chip in 3% on top of the total value of an offer when the player hits free agency. And it can go up by 1-3% yoy for the next offer so increases likelihood they retire there
