I had a great writing teacher who told me that every horror story is about someone being the last to understand what’s happening. I think I’ve been trying to write that way ever since.

Rewatched Sluizer’s original The Vanishing last night.

No screaming. No jump scares. No violence.

Just a man asking the same question for too long until he gets a terrible answer.

And still one of the most devastating horror endings ever filmed.

First time watch: Kurosawa’s Cure.

A movie about a killer that didn’t act, just listened long enough for an act to surface.

But never explained itself—and *that’s* what made it work.

Such vivid, grotesque detail, but never a reason. No answer. A mystery, but nothing to solve.

Saw a man try to open an automatic door. Flailed. Jumped. Yelled.

When it didn’t open, he walked away.

But there was nothing wrong with the door, it just wasn’t automatic.

All he had to do was pull.

Unsettling to think how easily we regress when our ‘system’ doesn’t respond.

It’s gloriously not camp—DC’s really leaning slowly into horror. Manhunter, Lantern, too. (Like Marvel’s The Immortal Hulk.)
