I am not looking at "pretty".

We have a few advantages today like better basic health and the ability to start small without starving to death....

But today's homesteaders have more support than the 19th century likely provided.

Mother Earth magazine is just one resource.

Depends on every individual situation, but it all "scales".

Start small, build up. It isn't drive through, or short attention span theater but it cam lower grocery costs, even if you cannot go fully self-sustaining.

Start with seeds, soil and three containers, if need be, but start!

And that's how you get started. Even if you cannot feed everyone with a harvest in a couple of years, you can build up your growing skills and might design a vertical garden space.

I considered teaming up with others using the neighborhood's community gardens.

If everyone grew a different veg, trading or food boxes might be possible, eventually growing into a sustainable, neighborhood cooperative.

Convincing any person their gender identity or sexual orientation is wrong and renders them a flawed human is not free speech.

It is bigotry.

Now expressing bigoted opinions is free speech. But as soon as you take action, like conversion therapy, you leave the free speech zone.
