I appreciate that I can have pretty level-headed discussions w you on what is in general a dogshit platform for discussion

I don't want to spiral into discourse about discourse so I'll prob leave it at this but everyone is always doing armchair psych on others and themselves, such is the human condition. (Tho I get what you're getting at) Best one can do is try to be self-aware with the motivations of self + others

And ofc in reality the two arent totally separate. Maybe this is a me problem but the important thing is to avoid being contemptuous, I would be lying if I didn't feel that impulse but it never leads to productive discussions. And moreover contempt can be turned on us with just as much justification

To me I try to separate people's felt enjoyment/preferences from their stated justifications/discourse, even if they misidentify the cause of their feelings (very very common generally across life) it doesn't make the feelings themselves invalid. Though ofc it causes problems in discussion

There's def a discussion to be had about that type of thing, just not as big of a deal when it's easily bifurcated from "normal" play (regardless of intent), compared to Bayo dodge which is foundational to player+enemy design. Fixing the former not so useful either way if the latter is on fire
November 6, 2025 at 4:31 PM
Yeah like been said various places in this convo 1. ex. Bayo dodge is the primary point of contention, not Bayo kilgore glitch 2. CAGs get charitability for many reasons orthog to depth, not a bad thing as such but can create weird disconnects 3. trying to be realistic and not devolve into gotchas

Yeah the axe mode is cool, with SAED I think their impulse is right but also I don't really understand what they're doing because 4U already kept it (mostly) under control by removing shield buff on use, the World change was what created the problem to begin with

Part of the problem with CB imo is that the 4U moveset is already pretty complete, it's just slightly too powerful in that game, so they started monkeying with it and even by Iceborne its kinda just doing a lot of random shit

I guess I don't disagree, I think people are just confused because there are very few popular examples of it being done right so it's unconsciously assumed impossible even though people still want it. Though DMC3 made a decent try of it IMO even with the CAG baggage so idk

Ehh I dont think gamers are "ashamed" more that usually these sort of terrain exploits are often very disjoint from the main dynamics (ex. getting enemies stuck on ramps/stairs). Obv the "real solution" is better enemy AI but if that's off the table then it makes sense. Not sure where items went tho

In base world CB is a bit brain off if you play enough bc you can spam the fuck out of GP -> SAED but Iceborne monsters are fast enough that its more of a real decision which is cool. It prob helps that the sword to axe GP is so easy that they balanced GP as just a slightly better wep specific guard

My fav use of story/tone in arcade style is Hellsinker, prob a bad one to copy directly for many reasons, but masterwork in using different gameplay + nongameplay elements in weird unexpected ways to create a cohesive whole
October 10, 2025 at 10:40 PM
The bit with the TV interview I thought fit the best, short goofy satire thats still got some bite, which feels like it fits the tone of the game. (Though I actually like stuff that feels a little unexpected or off-kilter in tone too, so maybe don't listen to me too much)
October 10, 2025 at 10:27 PM
One other thing, for the story bits I love the art and the presentation style but the prose and tone are a bit shaky, I don't want to dissuade you from having heartfelt stuff per se but the execution meshes weirdly with the structure and pacing

The trick is doing these consistently well where it's still using the core gameplay but feels different, AS doesn't have a 100% hit rate (e.g. the flying form of Seven Force is stupid). Terrain is prob the easiest way to succeed, the bench in the crab boss is the iconic example to me
October 10, 2025 at 9:57 PM
I've only played a bit of Gunstar Heroes but for example the sewer in AS, it goes from a fan boss with a ton of holes in the terrain that pushes you around, to a boat boss where you have weird indirect control of the platform, to a boss with easy patterns but a strict timer, light gimmick, etc etc
October 10, 2025 at 9:55 PM
Also in AS a lot of bosses have smallish hurtboxes protected by invincible segments (eg Xi Tiger) so you feel the particulars of the movement patterns more strongly. The second to last boss moving around like crazy with a small hurtbox is an "oh shit" moment that kinda gave me some of that
October 10, 2025 at 9:43 PM
But for some of the other bosses it kinda feels less differentiated, I wouldn't say it's bad by any means but seems harder to accomplish w/ the nature of the bullet cancel heavy gameplay (might change on harder modes)

To me the Treasure style in the AS, S&P, etc era is really held up by setpieces, it's something you see a ton in AS where every few bosses there is some twist in the terrain, how you have to attack, etc. I actually think you nailed that with the race boss, that's the exact thing I'm thinking of
