In the podcast, we discuss the many impacts nisse have on Christmas in Denmark, like the “nisse hat” worn when drinking.

And we wonder if the small, cute, and clever nisse, who often outwit the big creatures around them, are somewhat like the capable little country of Denmark likes to see itself.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 series, which began in January, looks at events that are simply expected to happen every year in Denmark, even if they aren’t formal holidays, and how they fit into the overall context of where Denmark is coming from, and where it’s going.

But when it comes to sports, Jante Law goes on pause. Finding the best and brightest suddenly becomes a national priority—at least until those athletes are successful (and wealthy 🤑) enough to pay substantial Danish taxes. 💰

What’s striking is the contrast with Jante Law—the Danish idea that no one should think they’re better than anyone else. In school, smart kids don’t get tracked into elite programs; they’re expected to sit in ordinary classes and help their slower classmates.
