Happy ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ Day to all who celebrate it! This book is now officially 65 years old…hopefully Scout will continue to delight and dazzle generations to come. Meanwhile, I’ll keep dreaming of people like Atticus and Boo and hope they’ll be here soon.

I had the great honor of hearing Mr. Leon Malmed’s witness testimony of his Holocaust survivor’s story today. While moments brought me to tears, his is ultimately a story of hope—good will alwaysTriumph over Evil, always speak up in the face of injustice, and awareness of slippery slope to Fascism.

What’s next? An actual fire department dedicated to burning books?
It was never just about schools, it was never just about libraries, and it isn't actually about the books.

It's about finding a way to banish entire people, entire ideas, out of society, back into the closet or worse.

So this morning, our usual Tuesday morning routine at school is to watch CNN 10 as part of Current Events. We got through about 3 minutes of the ‘edited’ version of DJT’s Inauguration Speech when several students asked if they could start fact checking it. Even 8th graders knew it was bad.

Trying to organize my thoughts to write an exceptional open letter to Democratic Senators how they can best reach across the aisle and partner with rational GOP Senators to reject the multitude of inept, corrupt, and clearly unqualified Cabinet Nominees in such a manner that will send a message 1/2

I was raised by a Sports Historian with whom I still golf with every Sunday. Growing up, my brother and I competed on our chosen playing fields, we were taught to play hard, fight for every point, but ultimately win with humility and lose with grace. Because both would be our lot on any given day.

So a private citizen who happens to be appointed to a currently non-existent government ‘oversight advisory’ committee can now name other private citizens who happen to work for the government and open them up for harassment and intimidation with zero accountability. Got it.

The DOE ensures all our children have access to educational opportunities. States are still in charge of curriculum, always have been. The incoming administration’s plan to do away with the DOE is about doing away with equal access. @hcrichardson.bsky.social explains it better than I can:

Nevada is at risk of having just shy of 200,000 people deported if the incoming administration has its way. Beyond logistics, this will devastate our communities, bring our economy to a halt, and put on the wrong side of history.
