Noted that the BBC article only touches environmental concerns and not the ethical ones re: theft. A personalised machine learning model will both work better and not involve stealing non-consented material. Conflating all machine learning is intellectually dishonest bullshit.
A quote from the BBC article from someone who objects to use of AI - one that seems carefully crafted to make her look as capitalist as all the tech giants desperate to hook people onto their ethically bankrupt LLM. "While Ms Zetteler admits she respects AI for all the social good it can achieve, she says she's concerned about the wider impact on society. "I'm happy that AI exists for blind people if they can have articles translated by AI and anything that is truly beneficial. But in general, I don't think it will benefit us long-term." Is she worried it might have a knock-on effect on her business, especially if rival companies are using AI?"

If we don't care about that, then we will probably use AI," he says. "So, we will have human judges for criminal cases, and human doctors to make decisions about who should get the transplant. But, weather forecasting will be gone soon, and anesthesiology too," says Prof Brusseau.'

Double-checking my understanding has reinforced how intellectually dishonest a lot of the data presentation is. 99% of the charts popping up quickly on Google Image Search are not remotely designed to be representative - the third one is better, and TBF is the same article as the first. (6/maybe-7?)
Chart from the Medium article "Is ChatGPT the next energy guzzler" A bar chart entitled "Energy Consumption Per Hour: Google Search vs GPT vs LED Bulb". The Y axis is Energy Consumption (kWh) from 0.0-3.5. The categories on the X axis are Google search at ~0.1 kWh, GPT Min at ~0.4 kWh, GPT Max at ~3.6 kWh, and an LED bulb at negligible. LED bulbs being, y'know, notoriously low energy usage, this strikes me as pretty ridiculous. Chart from Andy Masley on Substack's article "ChatGPT is not bad for the environment". It's actually not bad, bias notwithstanding. Two bar charts under the single title "Water consumed using ChatGPT vs other activities. The Y axes are Water Consumption ([US] gallons). The left graph runs from 0-750 gal. The X axis categories are ~300 Chat GPT queries at ~1 gal, one hour of TV in a us home at ~4 gal, and one hamburger at ~660 gal. The right graph runs from 0-14,000 million gallons, with the X axis categories showing ChatGPT at one million per day globally, and leaking pipes in the US in one day at I'm eyeballing about 12,000 million gal. The vs hamburger or TV isn't bad, but anything that generates a huge discrepancy like that feels cherry picked. The leaking pipes one is a fair point but also just so biased. Can we present a wide breadth data with the goal of understanding, please? More decent chart from the Medium article "Is ChatGPT the next energy guzzler", though of course all three graphs I have chosen are measuring different things. 🫠 A bar chart entitled "CO2 Emissions from Various Activities". The Y axis is CO2 Emissions (kg) from 0.0-80. The categories on the X axis are Eating Meat (daily) at just under 10 kg, driving for one hour at maybe 3-4 kg, flying for one hour at around 90 kg, using GPT (min) for one hour slightly lower than driving for one hour and GPT (max) for one hour sitting around 18 kg. It was not an exhaustive search, but this is the only graph I found quickly that seems like a realistic comparison, ish. Still, not comparing real world usage of any of those for a population (and driving has got to vary by like 400% depending on the car and the road).

I admit with the normalisation of capitalism=bad (true) there are some dubious takes floating around. But. Eternal growth (impossible) → enshittification. People existing for society rather than vice-versa. And of course, then everything collapses and the businesses beg the govt to bail them out. :)
