Assuming a programmable calculator doesn't count, my first computer was a Sinclair ZX80 kit that my father and I soldered together. Z80 processor with 1KB RAM. Learned to program in basic, Z80 machine code, and Forth.

Artemis Foul series has a protagonist mostly motivated by outside-the-law interests although winds up accidentally doing moral things. (It's been a while since I read them so probably other people can give better summaries.)
