Really interesting, was thinking if one could engineer the enzyme to take other di-aldehyde products to make new to nature molecules.

Research on bryophytes has increased significantly. This informative paper highlights the vast diversity while also compiling a wealth of knowledge at the genomic level. Thanks to all the authors. #plants #genome #bryophytes #moss #liverwort #plantscience

Bryophytes hold a larger gene family space than vascular plants - Nature Genetics
A super-pangenome analysis incorporating 123 newly sequenced bryophyte genomes reveals that bryophytes exhibit a larger number of unique and lineage-specific gene families than vascular plants.

Really nice job, and lovely to see some work that was started many years ago, actually lead to a publication. Thanks to @ec.europa.eu and Danmarks Frie Forskningsråd and others for the support.

We are deeply saddened by the news that Andrew D. Hanson (@adhansonlab.bsky.social) is no longer with us. He was an exceptional scientist, mentor, and leader in multiple fields. He constantly reminded us that over-promising would backfire. Rest in peace, Andrew.

Did you know that all peatlands together store more carbon than is stored in all the other living matter (viruses, archeae, bacteria, plants, animals, including humans) combined? That's why peatlands are important for our climate. More in our review

Would the glutamate not be recycled? Would be my first thought, maybe via a transamination reaction like with alpha keto-glu.
Just an idea.

Beetles are historically viewed as 'mess and soil' pollinators that often cause more harm than good. So why does this Appalachian beetle-pollinated flower make THIS MUCH nectar? We explore the natural history of Amianthium nectar and its interactions with beetle pollinators in new work in #AJB! 🧪

When i think of all the man made places on this list. Then a truly natural one is an easy pick.
Maybe i am biased with 20ish summers around the place, but still it is magnificent.
