reform fragmented governance, and enable nature-positive, people-centred transformations. Their Transformative Change Assessment (2024) suggests that today’s nature decline is rooted in disconnection from nature, unequal power/wealth, and short-termism;

He talked about coral reefs, climate change, “Burning Embers” and plausible futures. The situation is critical for corals as climate change accelerates. Conservation actions help but cannot keep up with the rate of change. Plausible futures are distressing.

WIOMSA Day 3 highlight was an interesting plenary presentation entitled “Sustainability – balancing nature, economy and society”, delivered by Dr David Obura. He is the current chair of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services.

Other presentations in the session included a photo-id study of the enigmatic Omura’s whale (a beautiful creature) and study of the overlap of marine traffic and cetaceans in the SWIO, which highlighted hotspots where speed restrictions or rerouting could reduce impacts.

The other humpback dolphin presentation was given by Shanan Atkins, on behalf of HuDoNet and outlined the process and results of designing the Network Action Plan. It summarised current knowledge of this dolphin conservation system, and [...]

hunting, chemical pollution, plastics and more. Tackling these will take a coordinated strategy among scientists, managers and funders. The aim of the session was to provide explicit examples of work being undertaken.

Two of the talks were about humpback dolphins:

But it was not all serious and science-y, a choir of Kenyan children regaled us with a song and dance about caring for the ocean. And the official Opening Cocktails were held on the lawn and after the sun went down, the vibes went up! The DJ played music from each of the WIOMSA countries [...]

The poster sessions had two themes: Fisheries and Ocean Health.

In the afternoon, we were spoiled for choice yet again, with another 8 sessions from Using Storytelling to Advance Marine Conservation and Financing a Sustainable Blue Future at different ends of the spectrum.

With 8 concurrent sessions, one is hard-pressed to choose which talks to attend. They ranged from Biodiversity, Species and Ecosystems Monitoring to Capacity Building, Gender and Inclusion to Innovation, Technology and Emerging Solutions to Governance, Policy and the Blue Economy to name a few.

This is an extraordinary platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and collaboration among researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders, a bridge to connect knowledge and concrete action. There are seven HuDoNet members here to take advantage of the opportunity.

More than 1200 “clever minds” were welcomed to the 13th Scientific Symposium by WIOMSA yesterday morning. This shows the phenomenal growth that has occurred since the first one three decades ago when just a handful of scientists gathered for the first symposium.

If you’re interested in helping, you can “Adopt a Humpback Dolphin”. Each dolphin has a unique fin with distinctive nicks and notches used for identification, like a human fingerprint. Many of the humpbacks in Kenya are more distinctive, (sadly) due to fishing net damage.
