Good question! The media (mainly right wing) has a lot to do with it focusing on the sensationalism of small boats which makes up c3-4% of the ‘issue’. There has been a 50% drop in net immigration in the last 12 months, the government needs to make much much more of this.

Great interview BUT talking about ‘immigration’ as the problem is the wrong characterisation, net immigration is coming down fast, the issue for much of the public are the channel crossings and related. Imo, an important distinction.

Rory saying we should be returning those who X the channel by boat to France and only taking genuine asylum seekers like judges from Afghanistan. I am confused, 95% of those who x channel by small boat claim political asylum and 60% are of those are granted it by our courts, are they not genuine?

Totally agree, look at the data. Boat crossings are c5% of the number and 60% of these are granted political asylum anyway. You want to reduce immigration then focus on the 95% or legal immigration
