Democracy can hardly be said to be well served by asking the voting population of a country to make a largely uniformed choice on a complex web of interconnected issues which they were (and which they remain) hopelessly ill-equipped to understand, let alone decide.

Democracy can hardly be said to be well served by asking the voting population of a country to make a largely uniformed choice on a complex web of interconnected issues which they were (and which they remain) hopelessly ill-equipped to understand, let alone decide.
And that also leads to increasing support for populists, and to increasing demand for ever more draconian measures to combat irregular migration from populists/populist leaders.

There's a secondary driver at play on the "more irregular migration" sub-loop, as well.
Not only do the restrictions on legal migration directly drive increases in irregular migration – the falling numbers throw the high level of irregular migration into ever starker relief.
