just as a PSA, I use this account mostly to follow a few people and keep an eye on news. I lean into community-owned social media these days, I'm wary of US-based infrastructure, and I really don't like bluesky management.

lots going in this week, if you're around in Oslo.

A week of creativity, history, and critical reflection at the OCEH Lab 🌿

Here’s what’s happening over the next few days 👇

bluesky is a shell game run by silicon valley grifters, and their narrative about "decentralization" is a joke—but after a few years in the activitypub space, the vibe there too is indescribably exhausting. increasingly I think the problem is the idea that a "good" social media exists anywhere.
hugo.town
technical, but to the point.

"AT Proto has become essentially a sort of ideological vaporware; a way for Jay Graber et al to run a social media platform while claiming they don't run a social media platform."

CEO of bluesky mocking trans users of her site with a bad-faith "cute" joke about "waffles" (i.e. how their concerns are just noise). every time I think I might give this site another shot, the people who own it out themselves again (and again) as weird, toxic jerks.

drop in, check out how the bluesky mods are handling The Situation, eyeroll, log back out again.

I drop in here from time to time but honestly, life is too short to commit to yet another US-based communication infrastructure.

we'll be expanding and updating the @uio-oceh.bsky.social site over the summer, so I figure why not throw open the question.

dear internet ( #EnvHum in particular ): what would you change to make this a better and more useful site for you? what works, what doesn't?

busy, to the point of exhaustion, but less and less interested in "social media" as such. a number of other things I'd rather do while rome burns.
hugo.town
entering US-centered algorithmically mediated spaces feels increasingly like poisoning yourself with someone else's drugs. how you doing though? your feed suggests you're confessing life changes to your dentist.

this site is so badly managed it's embarrassing.

Good morning. Let me check if I’ve got this right.
- Juni created a bot that shows what Aaron (head of trust and safety) likes
- His likes are public information
- Aaron likes a porn post
- Trust and safety ban the bot and creator in 16 minutes
- Creator appeals and ban is upheld

a badly moderated instance of 25 million users, where the default crisis response of the leadership is to go and hide in a corner, say nothing and pretend it isn't happening.
hugo.town
exactly how they handled some moderation issues last year that made me delete my account, because they clearly had no idea what they were doing. you'd think a year and half later some learning might have occurred but apparently, that's a no.
hugo.town
bunkering down into complete radio silence without even a simple band-aid like "we hear the concerns of our community and are working on how to best address the issues."
hugo.town
bluesky really fucking up on this singal issue, huh. it's actually quite weird to watch.
hugo.town
jesse singal openly palling it up with kiwi farms and still, crickets from bluesky safety. wild.
2damntrans.bsky.social
Hey @safety.bsky.app @aaron.bsky.team @jay.bsky.team. This is Jesse Singal talking about receiving assistance re: your website from a member of a website which exists primarily to stalk & harass trans people with the aim of making them kill themselves. At least one of their targets did exactly that.
hugo.town
anyway infrastructure is always part dream, isn't it. one reason why it's interesting.

at first I found this tension frustrating, it felt like a con: users were being drawn onto a platform that at a basic, technological level was not what it presented itself as, or what it led users to believe.

I've come around to it though. it gives the platform a vibrant, unfinalized quality.
