Following the acclaimed recent British Library exhibition Fantasy; Realms of Imagination, we return to glorious, mysterious and fantastical worlds through a queer lens at this evening with some of our most exceptional authors. On a rare visit to the UK, we welcome TJ Klune, author of the worldwide celebrated The Bones Beneath My Skin, The House in the Cerulean Sea and Somewhere Beyond the Sea and many others, alongside Tasha Suri, introducing her brand new The Isle in the Silver Sea, and novelist and writer Juno Dawson, creator of bestselling fantasy series Her Majesty’s Royal Coven. They are in conversation with the million copy bestselling author of The Bone Season and The Roots of Chaos series, Samantha Shannon.

Albertine Sarges joins us with ‘Girl Missing’ the highly anticipated follow-up to her acclaimed 2021 debut, ‘The Sticky Fingers’. The Hull Central Library gig (previous shows inc Black Country, New Road, Mattiel, BC Camplight and Sunflower Bean amongst many others) will be an intimate afternoon show showcasing the new album that releases this Friday. The album explores sisterhood, resilience, and healing from grief while embracing warmth and hope for the future.👧💨 A personal concoction of songs formed in industrial Berlin via coastal Margate, the album is eclectic yet deeply personal. ‘Girl Missing’ blends indie rock, blues, art pop, and 1970s influences with Albertine’s agile vocals. Alongside long time collaborator Lo Selbo, she shapes intricate soundscapes with airy flutes, layered choirs, and vintage organs to create warmth and vulnerability. With The Clash dubbing the albums titular single ‘girl missing’ as a “zesty dose of indie-pop energy, complete with string section.” Fans and newcomers alike are in for a treat as she plays an intimate show at Hull Central Library ahead of her European tour.

We're delighted to be taking part in the Heritage Open Days
again this year. We'll be showing some of the treasures from our stacks and welcoming @hulltourguide.bsky.social on Saturday 13th September too!
A visit to the James Reckitt reading room in Hull's Central Library with a talk by Paul Schofield - A History of Hull's Library Service at 10.30 on 13th September. Hull Central Library, designed by James S Gibson of London, opened in 1901. The James Reckitt Reading Room, more recently known as the Local Studies Library, was the original Reference Library. It features “beautiful fittings of mahogany inlaid with various colours and expensive woods”. Now home to the Art & Music Stacks, it also houses the Hull Libraries Quaker Collection, some of which date back to the 17th century, and the Napoleon Collection, originally purchased from Mr John Wilson Smith, a wholesale herring dealer in 1958. Items from both collections will be on display.

We had a great time at the Mini Malarkey at Western Library yesterday, authors, illustrators, puppets and much more. Thank you to everyone who came along!

Thank you to our good friend @chrisspeckwriter.bsky.social for gifting us a copy of his latest. "The witch at the end of the lane", a historical thriller set in Beverley, 1794. We expect ghosts (four of them), a kidnap, and at least one murder.
