So some tasks for 2026 will also be different, with a return, for example, to the revision of Proudhon's "Justice" top of the list. But the big project that I had set myself—completion of work on the "Mélanges" and a deep dive into the mutual credit literature—are still on schedule.

Translation in 2025 took some unexpected turns: still well over a million words of new material from important texts, but with more emphasis on the contexts for Proudhon's work than anticipated. And, with a bit of luck, there are a couple of very good things still to come.

Proudhon was the first great advocate of anarchist abstentionism, precisely because of his experiences in the nominally revolutionary government after the 1848 revolution. Déjacque himself proposed a transitional government and never seems to have been as radical in that sense as Proudhon.

What you think about the argument probably depends mostly on how you understand "synthesis." I probably lean toward a "pourquoi pas les deux?" position, recognizing multiple origins for anarchism. Socialism and liberalism were both themselves complex, developing and internally contested.
