I’m dying to discuss #WakeUpDeadMan but it will be spoilery, so I’m going to tuck it away in the alt text of this image. If you respond, please do it in alt text of a picture so we don’t ruin anything.

(If I’m missing some way that this approach is terrible, please let me know and I’ll delete)

It’s that time

My regal friend, the butter turkey.

(We’re eating chicken tonight, so this is our nod to tradition.)

Tried this Stuffing Focaccia recipe from King Arthur, and it’s a big hit! Likely going to be a new tradition for us.

I like The Chair Company okay, but my heart belongs to Detroiters.

I’ve been chipping away at the prep for this year’s Christmas cookie boxes—this is a big reason why I bought a freezer this year—and today I finished a biggie. Italian Rainbow Cookies!

I was SO THRILLED to see an ad at Civic Center BART for something for *all* of us—just a simple local store advertising to their town—that I doubled back to get a pic to remember it. It felt like a brief return to normalcy and I deeply appreciated it.

IKEA has a new doohickey that I think is going to wind up being a huge help: it’s a rack for holding multiple baking sheets, not for storage, but while you’re using them. It’s a simple, sturdy rack made of metal, and it collapses down flat for storage. It’s named SVARTABBORRE. Just $15!

Now I have 11 more of these li’l flavor pucks in the freezer. HOORAY! I am redeemed! And I didn’t have to do anything more, really! 12/

So tonight I did a quick test. I heated up a couple cups of chicken broth (just some Better Than Bouillon), then tossed a hunk of the dough in, and whisked. [clouds parting, harps playing, choir of angels] IT WORKED! 9/

I’ve only seen the first episode, so no discussion here yet please, but I am pleased to report that Death by Lightning is very much my shit. Matthew Macfayden at peak loveable-fuck-up, Michael Shannon in still-waters-run-deep mode, and a bunch of other great actors. And it’s so very brown!!

Lunch today: butternut squash soup, a recipe from Tom Douglas’ Seattle Kitchen, topped with thyme labne. It’s stormy here today!

Fall is my fourth favorite season, and god I love it so much

Started soaking 7 cups (!) of dried fruit in rum for this year’s fruitcake. Pineapple, apricots, raisins, prunes, cherries, dates, cranberries, ginger, mango, and dates. No gross glacé cherries this time, last year they tasted like overripe butt.

Ciabatta day! It was time to stock up. Once these cool, they’ll go straight to the freezer for future sandwiches & whatnot.

Wanda as Wendy Corduroy from Gravity Falls. (First time in years she’s gone outside the Homestar Runner universe for her costume.)

I did it! French Dip: the jus is beef broth, butter, garlic, carrot, thyme, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and a tiny pinch of msg. The sandwich is roast beef warmed in the jus, horseradish cream sauce, Gruyère, and pickled onions, on buttered & toasted homemade baguette.

Baguettes! One step closer to French Dip. Also made kabocha squash red curry coconut soup (leftovers from earlier this week).

Spooky season is in full swing here. We’ve read a little Poe (a comedy, though), The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and today we started reading Oscar Wilde’s The Canterville Ghost. We’re rewatching Ghosts (BBC version)! Also cozied up with a graphic novel about werewolves and witches (Mooncakes). 🦇 🎃

We finished reading Journey to the West (aka The Monkey King) today. It was a blast! It’s a classic Chinese novel from the 16th century; we read this newish translation by Julia Lovell. Highly recommended! /1

Also made a fry sauce with ketchup, mayo, pickle brine, Worcestershire sauce, gochujang, Lawry’s seasoning salt, garlic powder, and I think that’s it. It got a little kitchen sink-y on me. With Red Robin seasoned steak fries—they sell them frozen at the grocery store, and they’re actually good!
