In another world, you and the protest kids could talk respectfully to each other and figure out how to work together. But this is social media world, and none of you have any attention or self control to spare.

Can you recommend some good counter-narratives (preferably well-supported with accessible data?) I like to look at things from multiple angles, when possible.

Nice to see some optimism. Many of us who are younger (including grad students) see a grimmer picture. Maybe it’s just cause we lack context, or maybe it’s because we have more direct experience of how online discourse facilitates authoritarianism… or a bit of both?

In our case, one useful one is The Age of Surveillance Capitalism by Shoshona Zuboff. It’s a little academic/dense, but makes a very convincing and well-documented case for how we got here
