#introduction 🧵 👋 Going pseudonymous on the internet again. Feels important to me to shed identities, like chapters to my life.

Money and fame are the death of ambition

a video was made public on mrbeast’s youtube channel that he recorded and scheduled 10 years ago as a “message to future self”

folks found it inspiring to see how such a small creator back then is now so huge

i found it depressing cuz all his past self aspired to was fame, that was his only goal

Please get a hobby, it's important for your mental health.

it’s a lot harder to get unjustifiably outraged online when you have real hobbies that you’re involved with

So far all the apps I built and run have cost me on the order of $5, running since March this year.

LLMs made code cheap, but we have a lot of work to make sure apps are also cheap to run

Literally same. I've got dozens of projects and keeping the maintenence burden down is the number one priority. This means you have to host your own data or it has to be a static frontend. LoFi helps a lot here, PDS' is a total game changer.

put another way: i don't want your data—not just from an ideological "users should be in control" perspective, but from a pragmatic "this makes my app harder and more expensive to run" perspective

we've been so focused on making it easy to scale up that we've accidentally made it hard to scale down

i like making little web apps for myself/family/friends. the most annoying parts — the parts that drastically increase the scope, from "a bunch of HTML, CSS & JS files" to "a web server and database" — are auth+persistence. so i am very excited about atproto including a user-owned solution for both.

ive been spinning up vibe kanban (forked for changes to tangled and forgejo) and running multiple agents from my phone.

It's a wild time to be building software, thanks for the notes!

i can agree with that, yes. Bootstrapping a community through technology is dangerous

Keen!

Install nixOS, give me ssh access, and I'll commit to the software maintaince on it :3

hah, totally understandable. I don't want litigation, but I do believe that "betting risk" is how trust develops
hyl.st
sōm @hyl.st · 4d
that leaves PDS, feeds, moderation layer. While there are legal risks, this is about building trust! what better way to do that than work together to host something that could get us in real trouble? I *want* to know the others on my PDS
hyl.st
sōm @hyl.st · 4d
respectfully disagree. Relays are optional, Im not sure why you'd community host one, there's no lever there, but it is beneficial for the ecosystem at large. Running an AppView is desirable, but its so large and requires an altogether different app. I'd rather leave that to new interaction paradigm

Heading to Bowen Island to visit my parents.

Will also set up a solar #meshcore node there.
A RAK WisMesh device with MeshCore firmware leaning against the window on the 257 bus while crossing the Lions Gate bridge.

going back and forth between: i already have a server, it's a few lines of config to run a pds and dual power is built through community, being an island onto myself helps noone.

So new proposal: you invite me to your pds, and I'll host a tangled knot + spindle (maybe) that you can use :)

I am begging you, please use an RSS reader and *curate* your own media diet.

You will never be free if you rely solely on recommendation algorithms!

i think we also need a media diet shift in society, really think about what we are consuming and how we interact with others online, not wholly rely on "for you" algos and waiting on site-wide moderators to curate our experiences

we need to advocate for online societal change

my positive vision for atproto is for people to have a greater degree of self-determination on the public social web.

baseline experience should be decent, but motivated folks should be able to organize and get more control over their online spaces and experience in line with their norms+values.

interesting! how come a current node can't connect to the network and read records?
