Dad of Layton the field spaniel; data scientist, ice cream maker, hiker, reader.
Very much felt like the long-term plot was going to be Vetinari's retirement (possibly with Lady Margolotta) after the Undertaking (subway) project completed, handing over the reins to Moist.

Moist would be a very different leader, appropriate for a very changed city.

If I remember right, the GPU did get a whopping extra 4MB of VRAM on the new 3DS (for a total of 10MB), which may have helped it in a few scenarios.

I actually have a lot of nostalgia for the 250-in-one shareware CD I got as a kid. Played the first hour or two of a whole lot of DOS games that way. Commander Keen, Crystal Caves, various text adventures...

...Also got a virus from it, but still.

Does 1984 count as early 80s, because Starlight Express is assuredly a thing.

Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou was formative for me, and I'm so, so glad it finally got a US release.

Going by your tastes here, I'd say you might find yourself enjoying Journal with Witch this season? It's a nice character-driven drama (not actually fantasy). Only 2 eps so far, but they're both great.

fwiw, there is quite a good modern remaster of RA and the original C&C from a few years back! it regularly goes on sale for cheap.

Reminds me of Jeff Vogel's recurring bit with the Giant Intelligent Friendly Talking Spiders in the Exile/Avernum games (which are basically indie Ultima games, so that checks out).

They are exasperating but frequently hold the keys to important quests.

Man, there really is a gacha for everything, huh?

This guy is probably better known than the game he's in.

In terms of books, I will suggest "The Spear Cuts Through Water," which is entirely self contained, beautifully written, and has its own mythology which felt to me like it had both Latin American and Chinese elements. No dragons or elves, but it does contain a pissed off moon goddess.

Not a movie or book, but I'll mention that the Avernum games by Jeff Vogel / Spiderweb Software have a fully realized fantasy world with a very unique setting (an underground world of rebels with lizards, cat people, and aliens).

It does have dragons, though, if that's disqualifying.

It would need a use case that benefits from the form factor.

I have a smart watch for fitness, because measuring heartrate well requires something affixed to the body. I don't have AR glasses, but it makes sense to have a visual overlay render in front of your eyes.

What's the AI equivalent?

I think it's only in the last few years that they finally stopped giving him angry eyebrows on all the US box art.

To your point in part 4 - humor in games seems under-utilized. Games like Psychonauts, Untitled Goose Game, and Thank Goodness You're Here live rent free in my head, but either I am missing most of the attempts or very few devs go this route. It's hard to get right, to be fair!

Got a nice boxed copy of it for 968yen on my 2023 trip. The box art is gorgeous. I guess it just wasn't that popular in Japan...?

Jeebus, yeah. I was going to try to at least make it over to BEEP to window shop for games, but ran out of time.

I'll have to go back...

The Nintendo Museum didn't have anything bigger than medium for the Zelda shirts when I was there in March... going up to XL at least is an improvement!
