I'm not a fan of Halloween decorations that are overly gruesome or scary. Halloween is about autumn beauty, harvest abundance, remembering those who are dead, and those who are undead

he talks a good game but I just don't really trust him to follow through on anything. Too much of a squishy opportunist, doesn't have much genuine vision

I think you have to read all the ottoman stories as a for-the-censors code, they have little to do with anything in Turkey and are really talking about some ruler in the west
hyperplanes.bsky.social
If you need new analogies, the typical examples for "really bad guy" before Hitler were
-Pharaoh
-Nero
-Herod

And the ottoman sultan--any of them--was the go-to example of a tyrant among enlightenment writers

Pritzker seems like the only choice for president right now tbh. Only one who seems to get how bad this all is, only one who is likely to prosecute these crimes instead of normalizing them

send me your copy of Crazy Christians: A Call To Jesus and I will rebind it in leather

I might get myself a typewriter just so I can go clickity clack. If Peter Theil still wants my data for his palantir he'll have to come rummage through the garbage can for spent ink ribbon

The old economist way of teaching "don't do long-run inflation adjustments" as a lesson is hand students an appliance catalog from the 50s and ask them which things they would buy at 1950s prices. The answer is basically nothing

It's different from Nixon in China, I think it's pretty clear Netanyahu is forced into this position by his own disastrous war. Zero percent chance he's considering this without the war being as unpopular as it is

Yep. Basically all GDP critiques boil down to "imagine GDP was meant to do something other than it was meant to do, THEN it is a bad measure," which is needless to say not very persuasive.

That GDP is not a well-being measure does not mean there's anything wrong with GDP.

Which brings me to my main point which is that there really aren't any modern sidings that actually look good. I consider this a major unsolved problem in modern architecture
hyperplanes.bsky.social
they put new siding up on the house down the street and it looks awful, really cheapens the whole neighborhood. It's shocking because they took genuine hardwood siding off, and what's still underneath is a sub-siding made of solid cedar. Now covered up in grey horrid aluminum

Trying to reverse engineer, $530.27 in at the exchange rate on Dec 17 2021 was something like £396. Using BoE inflation calculator that would be a bit more than £4 in 1843, when the story takes place. £4 is lot more than 15s, he's overstated Bob's income more than five-fold
hyperplanes.bsky.social
I'm totally unable to reproduce these, did he just totally make it up? There's a few ways to measure inflation, nothing give you anything close to this number. I wonder if he misunderstood how shillings worked before decimal but even that still gives you way smaller numbers bsky.app/profile/karl...

You're right that food would have been more of income, rent would have been less of income, etc. Another fallacy here though is almost nobody makes the federal minimum wage in the US, this is not a relevant comparison
hyperplanes.bsky.social
I don't know where he's getting this number from. 15s in is £0.75 in the modern decimal system which adjusts to £121.78 after inflation since 1843, for an annual salary of £6,332.56. That's $8,479.12 at current exchange rate

Can someone explain "all night revival" to me, is this a euphemism for Kristallnacht
hyperplanes.bsky.social
actually I think he's doing something different here, attempting to hijack the conversation with this nonsense about nuance when the reality is that this hypothetical person who wants to allow their "cameos" in Sora does not exist, he made it up, he's lying bsky.app/profile/hype...

This is a REALLY good video that gets into the *specifics* of how AI is degrading our information environment and putting truth further out of reach for the average person / the population as a whole

I walked into the lounge last night to find my teenage son watching this. We have long admired @kurzgesagt.org and found their videos to be extremely illuminating. But this one in particular I think is so important right now!

Like, I've literally never heard of replacing a spark plug on a car newer than the 1980s
hyperplanes.bsky.social
EVs have air filters. I'd say cam belts, spark plugs, HT leads, exhaust pipes are not common maintenance issues in ICE cars unless you are talking really old cars, in which case I'm guessing really old EVs will have a similar range of failures
