Yes indeed. My other grandfather was a little too young; graduated from army air force flight school in mid-1945.

My grandfather (a draftsman/mapmaker) was transferred out of Patton's HQ like a week before the Bulge started; ironically, he was hoping to join a unit that would see "real fighting" against the Nazis but he didn't get back to the front in time for anything but the surrender.

having switched from Chrome to Firefox somewhat recently, this is _extremely_ annoying behavior

(e.g. waiting in line is time I am _not_ able to go and be free to do something else creative or fun.)

I grew up in the 80s/90s (X-ennial) and I would say the overwhelming majority of these circumstances are familiar; certainly the parts about being expected to live a mostly unstructured life.

I am not good at waiting in lines, though! But I actually thought that was _because_ of my upbringing :).

Ah, the "getting into urbanism" starter quest: why does this road suck so much? Mostly it makes you want to ban cars and build housing, I find 😂

Maryland played out of the minds and Michigan still managed to cover, somehow. Pretty impressive.

Kind of wild that he is this way. Wasn't he also one of the loud voices of reason opposing the very bad private equity deal?

"Um, yeah? Hello? Hi! Yes, I have some concerns about the *University of Michigan* as it relates to this matter—"

If it must be partisan, my usual go-to is PR.

My principal concern with gubernatorial appointment is that it would provide a mechanism for direct political interference, which in the light of, say, Florida—I am loathe to countenance. Universities move on different timelines than governors.

Agreed—board positions would ideally be nonpartisan but I just don't see a lot of evidence that very many people are prepared to assess regent-level candidates on their individual merits.

Game of Blood 3—
