paragraph 175 in west versus east germany is an interesting natural experiment, because you had two states start from the same legal code and similar culture, and you got to see whether it's better to be gay under communism or gay under capitalism

east germany wasn't perfect here, but i also think a lot about how the socialist state decriminalized homosexuality earlier and had the more progressive & tolerant approach, to the point where there was a worry during reunification that east german queers would be back under paragraph 175

east germany fully decriminalized homosexuality* in 1968, 35 years before Lawrence v. Texas!

* small caveat: there remained a penalty in the law for an adult having specifically homosex with a minor that was repealed in 1989

my 'favorite' fact about the holocaust is that many gay men in the camps were reimprisoned after the end of the war because they were serving lawful sentences under paragraph 175, and that for the next two decades west germany continued to arrest and incarcerate gay men

it's not a coincidence that 'pro-natalism' has gained popularity alongside a resurgence of queerphobia. the 'we need to encourage more reproduction' people and the 'we should torture kids to turn them straight' people are part of the same project.
