This is standard in American English but not in British English.
A similar example appears in the father's song at the end of Mary Poppins "Let's Go Fly a Kite." An Englishman would always go AND fly a kite.

Contemporary levels of inequality mean that the statement "the economy as a whole is thriving" is meaningless as a means of describing the experience of the vast majority of Americans.
You may think that people who refer to their own experience are weirdos, but you're the one who is out of touch.

Think of the "jokes" little kids make up. They have the form of a joke but they're not (conventionally) funny. A person with a very literal mind who can't find humour in jokes can still recognise the patterns and forms.
