At #WEF #Davos, the world’s richest will meet under “A Spirit of Dialogue”. But dialogue w/out multilateral cooperation & int’l law means nothing. While most of the #SDGs are off-track, authoritarian practices threaten peace, worsen the climate crisis & erode #humanrights. A 🧵

There is a lot of funding available to finance the #SDGs incl climate action, but not enough political will, particularly from high-income countries. We urgently need action rooted in #humanrights for global changes from taxation on wealth to ending fossil fuel subsidies. bit.ly/4aZIneY
Why are the Sustainable Development Goals way off track?
It’s looking less and less likely that the SDGs will be achieved by 2030 – and it’s all because of significant underinvestment for a decade.

Lack of money for the #SDGs means not enough funding for health, education, housing & social protection in low-income countries that desperately need it to guarantee economic and social rights for their people. We’re now 4 years away from the 2030 target with 82% off track.

Adequate finance for mitigation, adaptation, loss & damage and just transition is vital to protect millions especially historically marginalized communities. Yet the huge gap between what is needed, pledged & delivered leaves govts unable to fight #climatechange and achieve #SDGs

To get the SDGs back on track, govts must:
- Phase out fossil fuel investments + end subsidies
- Address the debt crisis
- Stop tax abuse via #UNtaxconvention
- #TaxtheSuperRich & those most responsible for the climate crisis: fossil fuel giants

Geopolitical football: Iran? Trump? How the game can stand strong in a fractured world
Geopolitical football: Iran? Trump? How the game can stand strong in a fractured world
The 2026 World Cup is set to be a polarising event but, even if it will not be the first to be politically contentious, it will expose a growing unease Five months out from the World Cup the politics are impossible to avoid. There are concerns relating to one of the host countries, the US, with armed immigration officials roaming through its cities and visa restrictions ramped up against foreign visitors. One qualifying nation, Iran, is experiencing a public uprising against its leadership, with the regime attacking its citizens in response. Among other qualifiers there are concerns over democratic backsliding in Tunisia, ecological crimes in Ecuador and , in the future host country Saudi Arabia. And that’s just for starters. It sometimes feels as if this summer’s tournament, the one Gianni Infantino recently described as “the greatest show ever on planet Earth”, will serve as an inescapable reminder of the depressing state of the world in 2026. It could yet be an event that goes down in infamy. But it is hardly the only tournament to have prompted ethical concerns and serves as a reminder that the issue of how global sport should engage with such issues has remained largely unresolved. Exploitation of Earth's resources is benefiting the wealthiest at the expense of the majority

Over 110,000 people petitioned the Chancellor to act. We handed their signatures into Downing Street today.
