In 1887, British forces kidnapped & exiled the King of Opobo in today’s Nigeria. British Palm oil traders had persuaded the government that the tariffs he imposed restricted their profits. It was a milestone in the Scramble for Africa and indirect rule by Britain.

As Israeli forces advanced into central Gaza City, these APC bombs, alongside airstrikes and bulldozers, flattened dense residential neighborhoods like Tel al-Hawa and Sabra. Satellite imagery shows at least 650 buildings destroyed in six weeks. Residents described blasts that felt like earthquakes, with no warning in some cases. Military experts told Reuters the explosions rivaled Israel’s largest U.S.-supplied aerial bombs, the 2000-pounders, sending debris hundreds of meters and collapsing multi-storey buildings. The use of APCs as bombs is highly unusual and risks indiscriminate damage in urban areas, the experts said. Israeli officials said the tactic was needed to counter alleged Hamas booby traps and was guided by military necessity. Hamas denied booby-trapping buildings at scale. The affected groups include some of the world’s best-known aid organizations, among them: ▪️ Multiple branches of Doctors Without Borders ▪️Oxfam affiliates ▪️CARE ▪️Norwegian Refugee Council ▪️ International Rescue Committee ▪️World Vision. Israel’s military aid authority, COGAT, says the listed organizations bring in less than 1% of aid entering Gaza and insists assistance will continue through groups that received permits. Aid agencies strongly dispute Israel’s claims, saying the rules are arbitrary, risk endangering staff, and will massively constrict humanitarian operations in an already devastated enclave.
