This is why I think he doesn't realize that he's been a Russian asset since the 1980's.
His ego has deluded him into thinking he's some "deal maker", when really he's just rich an asshole who no one questions out of fear of losing their job or because of mafia-like retribution.

He's spent his entire life where he's been the boss.
Except with close family, in most instances in life he's "had all the cards", so he's used to people kissing his ass (out of fear), or placation.

His rich friends realized they could use that to their advantage and get him to do what they want.
