And it didn’t. All the coating sank to the bottom of the bowl, so the popcorn was pretty bland. But the actual spice blend is delicious. (⭐️⭐️⭐️)

Too often, the film feels like a clunky adaptation of a play with melodrama and wooden staging distracting from an otherwise solid direction. (⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2)

I was suspicious of this popcorn: the technique outlined by (usually formidable) Popcorn Board didn’t seem like it would work. 🧵 8/10

Joe: This was a tough movie to watch. It’s claustrophobic and uncomfortable, but buoyed by fine performances - especially by Fraser and Chao (who, let’s be honest, should have won the Oscar - no shade against Jamie Lee Curtis). 🧵 7/10

Instead it felt a bit sandy from the granulated sugar, but with a punch of ginger you could feel in your nasal cavities. Did I still eat several handfuls? Sure. But there are probably better things to do with your jar of powdered ginger. (⭐️⭐️1/2) 🧵 6/10

Dave: Gingersnap popcorn sounds like a good idea - who doesn’t like a gingersnap? - but the warm, toasty tones that come with actually baking gingersnaps were lost in this popcorn mix. 🧵 5/10

The film faltered, though, in fully translating the play into a movie - what might come across as poignant in a play can be a little trite in a movie. Every so often the conversations, stage directions, and lack of inner dialogue made the movie ring hollow.  Still, it’s worth a watch (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️). 🧵 4/10

Fraser was great, though I do wonder how much acting the makeup and bodysuit was doing, even if his overall performance was amazing. Fraser’s costars were similarly excellent, particularly his best friend played by Hong Chau and Fraser’s ex-wife played by Samantha Morton. 🧵 3/10

The Nerdery Movie Night #274: The Whale & Gingersnap Popcorn Snack Mix

Dave: The Whale had been on our respective lists for awhile, mostly because we (like everyone) had a hard time seeing Brendan Fraser as a serious actor since all I knew him from was The Mummy. 🧵 2/10

I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve never seen Almost Famous, so I’ll tell ya what: I’ll queue it up for a future Nerdery Movie Night. And maybe that Crowe memoir will make its way to our book club… I did love his films when we were in high school!

Isn’t this the dumb-dumb who cast one of the deciding vote for RFK Jr.? And Kennedy promised he’d meet with him monthly to discuss medical stuff? Leopards, meet face.
