Daily DBZ 189-2. Vegeta hasn't gotten to do anything this whole fight, so he gets pissed and unleashes a massive storm of ki blasts. But Cell shrugs it off and smacks Vegeta into the ground. As Cell attempts to finish the job, Gohan blocks the blast with his shoulder taking a gnarly shoulder wound.

Gohan dives in front of Vegeta's crumpled body to block a huge glowing orb of energy, smacking Gohan in the shoulder.

The behelit is a red egg shaped medallion with most of the features needed to create a human face, set into a gold loop you would tie a necklace around. This behelit’s features have aligned themselves into a mask of terror and anguish; the blue eyes are peeled open and weeping blood, and the mouth is agape, showing large white teeth and a pink tongue.

The art of Berserk is almost singlehandedly what inspired me to start drawing. I literally learned how to put pencil to paper by doing panel studies as i read through the manga. Drawing Pippin for the first time was the moment i decided to really put my all into building this skill.

And then i drew the behelit, and realized just how little i knew and how far i had to go. Comparing yourself to a master like Miura is, i think, one of the stupidest things you could do as an artist. But i fell into that trap and decided until i had a better handle on the fundamentals i wouldnt draw any more Berserk stuff. My personal goal for the last three years has been to get to a point where i can draw this dumb egg face without feeling like an imposter.

But lately i’ve realized that feeling just isnt gonna go away for me. So fuck it, Berserk’s back on the table. There’s just too much i can learn from how this man carried himself in the art form to ignore one of my reasons for doing this thing i love.

I didn’t start reading Berserk until after Miura died. So i didn’t really grasp what people meant when they talked about how much of a loss his death was. But with every chapter, every full page spread of Guts swinging his stupid slab of a sword through hordes of demons, every new abomination lurking in the night, i started to feel that loss myself. “Simple shapes with grotesque details” is a good way to describe his style, and it is truly perfect. It’s a style i’m going to keep striving for as long as i continue to make art.

Malo is a chubby cheeked toddler dressed in what i assume is the style of a samurai? He wears a flowing gown with a body wrap and a simple shirt, arm bands, with his hair tied in a top knot. Malo is looking at the viewer with no expression, yet still exuding harsh judgement.

The old illustration of Malo, done in black ink and pencil. Drawn in i believe March of 2024.

This one is simply Malo’s face. Back then I had two semi-related, incredibly bad notions on how to draw:

1. Stick with the first lines you make. I was so afraid that “wasting” lines would lead to overly complicated drawings, so i forced myself to commit to really weird decisions.

2. For some reason i didnt think i ever needed to measure out proportions? I would tell myself to eyeball it under the assumption that if it was way off i’d see that immediately. Cleary this was nonsense lol.

I dont actually think this is the WORST thing i’ve ever drawn, but it’s a great example of these two bad mentalities coming together to create something straight out of the uncanny valley.
