The working class refers to everyone excluding the ruling class. It doesn't just apply to actively working people, it just means "other than the wealthy". If you have a better word that doesn't serve to separate and divide the "other than wealthy" people I would love to hear it

I think worker's isn't a bad word yet. Working class. I suppose it's less inflammatory than the proletariat.
