But they apparently played with a bunch of the local bands I was hanging out with at the time the following night too (a 2-venue event at the same venue and next door), and I can't think why I would have been at the first and not the second. Maybe I went to both but only watched them at the first?

Looks like Red Krayola played O-Nest with Aburadako on Oct 22, 2006, which chimes with what I think I remember. Apparently Jim O'Rourke was in the band for the show, which is cool.

Songs like Reggae Reggae by The Real Kids or Dangerous Rhythm by Ultravox are one side of that particular 20-sided die. Dreadlock Holiday is a slightly different one. All valid as far as what I’m taking about goes though.

I think it definitely does, yeah. People inside the scene mocking how outsiders see it (or denying the scene exists); outsiders observing (mockingly, ambivalently or curiously); fans going giddy nuts over; tryhards desperately attaching themselves to trends; artists mocking their own derivativeness.
