Under Cronkite, it was the Cronkite and the best and most correspondents anywhere. Under Dan Rather, it was aggressive investigations (Eye On America segment was not a soft-focus feature). And also, there was the slight possibility Rather would lose it on air. The Couric reboot didn’t work.

Why watch the CBS Evening News over NBC or ABC? It doesn’t have a true I-Team. All the correspondents are pooled and stretched. The DC bureau is really thin. Beyond DC, LA and London, the bureaus are mostly closed. Cost cuts got so deep they were using O&O reporters and Weather Channel segments.
