We're a brand-new academic journal aimed at promoting an individual-based perspective in ecology.

We publish under a diamond open-access model with @pensoft.bsky.social - if you-re studying individual-based ecology feel free to get in touch!

Volker also discussed individual-based ecology as a concept and presented our journal at the GfÖ meeting - he delivered an insightful presentation on our goals and mission and why ecology on the individual level matters!

Last week, IBE was represented at GfÖ's annual meeting in Würzburg, Germany by our Editor-in-Chief Volker Grimm! Ecology is at the centre of what we do and we are excited we got this opportunity to share what IBE is all about and talk to like-minded people.

Animal energetics, movement, and coexistence are inextricably linked. What insights emerge when we consider these processes together? In our new paper, we present a conceptual framework that integrates these domains, outlines their connections, and highlights the value of their joint study.
Triangle of links between the processes, highlighting their general interactions.

🤩New methods paper! IBASAM (Individual Based Anadromous SAlmonids Model) opens up new opportunities for research on the response of salmonid meta-populations to environmental changes, the exploration of management practices, with further developments possible.

See more here: doi.org/10.3897/ibe....
Infographic illustrating a model of salmonid eco-evolutionary responses to environmental and human-induced changes. The diagram is divided into four main columns: Entities, Submodels, Observations, and Scenarios.

Entities include individuals like fish, redds (egg nests), and fry siblings, as well as spatial units like rivers, sea regions, weirs, and populations.

Submodels (center panel) represent a daily cycle of salmonid life processes, including reproduction, emergence, growth, survival, maturation, movement, and fishing, both in rivers and at sea. Arrows indicate migratory and developmental paths, with key processes labeled 1–10.

Observations detail population-level metrics such as abundance, sex ratio, allele frequency, and migration dates over time, along with individual-level traits like growth curves.

Scenarios at the bottom show the effects of selective fishing, climate change (with warming projections RCP 2.6 to RCP 8.5), and connectivity (e.g., dam passability) on salmonid populations.

I'm delighted to join the team of scientists seeking to provide a venue for agent-based modeling in ecology and conservation.

Send us your models! We can't wait to read all about 'em.

Important call: On the relevance of individual based approaches in studying climate change related responses. Also reminds me of my latest research proposal, let's see how the review for this one turns out. 🫣
