Removing dependencies on foreign suppliers is a noble objective — more so when the fragility of foreign partnerships is so dramatically exposed. Is the cost of subsidies greater than the value of a strong negotiating position and the EU independence it provides? Key is of course what and how much.

A recent assessment estimated around 1.2 million claimants still receiving legacy benefits and tax credits, all due to be migrated to UC by the end of the rollout period. With a UK population of ~ 69.3 million, that corresponds to under 2% of the population receiving legacy means‑tested benefits
