Hello Bluesky 👋

At Protection Approaches, we believe in the collective responsibility to prevent identity-based violence in the UK & internationally.

We therefore work to prevent hate crime, violent extremism, and mass atrocities, toward advancing the UK's responsibility to protect those at risk.

This is why over the last year, we’ve been working together to produce a 10-point Manifesto for Change that includes practical, evidence-based policies that can transform the way we respond to hate.

📈 The past decade has seen spiralling levels of hate crime. Official stats show incidents have more than tripled in England & Wales. With just 1 in 4 victims reporting incidents, we know that this is the tip of the iceberg.

Yet, the government hasn’t released a Hate Crime Action Plan since 2016.

🚨NEW: last week we launched our Manifesto for Change with our wonderful colleagues at University of Leicester's Centre for Hate Studies at Labour Party Conference

📢 Continuing our focus on transnational repression (TNR), FPC Research Fellow Dr Saipira Furstenberg examines the challenges democracies face in confronting authoritarian TNR.

She explores policy gaps, risks to human rights, and why coordinated, rights-based strategies are essential. ⬇️

As we mark one year since the tragic murder of Alice, Elsie, and Bebe at a children’s dance class in Southport, our thoughts are with their families as they continue to grieve.

We reflect on how what followed became, for many, a moment of national reckoning 💭

💡 Excellent piece by our Trustee Sherine El Taraboulsi-McCarthy on Gaza & the reckoning between humanitarianism & protection

"We must rethink the role of international and local humanitarian actors in providing protection without abrogating the fundamental responsibility of states to provide it."
The Gaza crisis demands a humanitarian reckoning | Humanitarian Practice Network
We cannot afford to give up on Gaza – nor on the principles and responsibilities that define humanitarianism itself.

We look forward to both working with and toward government to help realise the Covenant’s vision and to ensure that civil society continues to play a central role in shaping a fairer, safer future for all. 🤝
ibvprev.bsky.social
🧾 The Covenant sets out a commitment to:

- Designing & delivering policy in partnership with local communities
- Respecting civil society’s independence
- Investing in long-term collaboration through sustainable funding
- Embedding inclusive participation to strengthen social cohesion & resilience

It was great to be at the launch of the government's new Civil Society Covenant last week.

A timely and important step toward building more equitable relationship between government and communities. 🧵

💭 The broader challenge remains: mass atrocity crimes are becoming a systematic feature of modern malign statecraft, used deliberately to destroy, displace & entrench power.

As this kind of violence increasingly shapes geopolitical realities, the UK must update its approach accordingly.
ibvprev.bsky.social
She noted that the UK's approach to atrocity prevention has not been updated since 2019, despite the increasing use of identity-based atrocity violence against civilians.

✅ FCDO Minister @catherinewestmp.bsky.social acknowledged the concern & committed to taking the issue forward - a welcome step.

📺 This week during an Urgent Question to the Foreign Secretary on the UK's response to the worsening situation in Sudan, @melanieward.bsky.social MP raised an important question about the UK’s approach to preventing & responding to mass atrocity crimes. 🧵

These learnings will guide our work with stakeholders across Stoke-on-Trent as we co-design a new Community Cohesion Strategy for the city 🤝

For over three months Israel deliberately blocked life-saving supplies. It controls who eats, who moves & who survives.

Palestinians are starving. Many are killed in line.

The world is watching.

We've joined 200+ organisations to demand an end to this deadly scheme.

The new Israeli-US backed distribution scheme forces Palestinians in Gaza into militarised zones just to access food.

Food is now fenced, scanned and weaponised. This is not humanitarian aid.

It is a system of forced displacement, surveillance, and mass violence, disguised as relief.

Last month we launched a new paper with @csns-uk.bsky.social exploring the future of UK national security & foreign policy amid rising authoritarianism & systemic competition.

It argues we must rethink how the UK integrates human rights into its strategic outlook.
