ICARE | #Academia Meets #AnimalAdvocacy🦉

#ICARE was founded from the realisation that #AnimalRightsLaw lacked attention in legal education, research, and advocacy.⚖️

📚 ICARE aims to bridge academia and advocacy, empowering #scholactivists to turn research into legal protections for animals.🌐

Her research reminds us that while animal rights arguments often seem universal, each context adds its own layers of meaning — and Taiwan’s experience enriches our understanding of global veganism. 🐻🐖
icareanimals.bsky.social
Song Lopez highlights how young advocates bring creativity, community engagement and policy focus into the debate, showing that veganism is not only about individual ethics but about collective transformation. 🕊️
icareanimals.bsky.social

Rooted in a long tradition of religious vegetarianism, this new wave of veganism goes beyond spiritual practice. It connects animal welfare, environmental awareness and policy-making, aligning local activism with global sustainability frameworks. 🌿

In her paper 'Going Weigen: Animal Advocacy and Sustainability Intersections under Taiwan’s New Vegan Movement,' PhD Candidate Gina Song Lopez offers a thought-provoking exploration of how Taiwan’s new generation of activists is reshaping vegan advocacy after the Sunflower Movement.

📖 Bibliography Recommendation 🦉

From compassion for animals to animal liberation, health, and sustainability, veganism in Taiwan is evolving into a powerful social and ethical movement. 🌏💚

If courts can repair the suffering of companion animals, might the same reasoning one day protect other sentient beings covered by Article 521-1 of the French Criminal Code? 🐷🐴🐬

⚖️ Judges relied on existing texts — article 1240 of the Civil Code on reparation and the 2015 sentience clause (article 515-14) — echoing how French law already repairs ecological harm to nature itself.

Now, similar unreported rulings in Béziers and Rennes suggest the idea is spreading. 🧳
icareanimals.bsky.social
🧑‍⚖️ The story began in Lille, where Maître Graziella Dode argued five landmark cruelty cases between 2024 and 2025. Each time, the court awarded compensation for the animal’s own suffering, from €100 for Lanna, a cat beaten to death, to €1 500 for Buck, a dog stabbed during a domestic dispute.
icareanimals.bsky.social
This emerging idea — called 'préjudice animalier' — recognises that animals themselves can suffer harm deserving legal repair.
It is a distinct category of damages: not for the emotional loss, not for the NGO’s moral harm, but for the animal’s own suffering. ❤️‍🩹
icareanimals.bsky.social
Can a court compensate a dog or cat for their own suffering? 🐈‍⬛🐕
🇫🇷 In France, judges are beginning to say yes. ✅

On World Animal Day, we honour Dr Jane Goodall (1934–2025) 🦍

She showed the world that animals are not mere objects, but beings with emotions, intelligence, and lives of their own. Her compassion reshaped science and inspired generations to see with empathy.

May her memory be a blessing. 🕊️

Learning the basics of AI helps us avoid misunderstandings and exaggerations, while also exploring its limits responsibly. Let’s focus on knowledge, not myths ✨📚.

💡 Princeton PhD candidate Sayash Kapoor, co-author of AI Snake Oil with Arvind Narayanan, explains AI and its limits.

AI and Animals 🐒🤖

When it comes to artificial intelligence, we often swing between hype and fear. But both extremes stop us from thinking deeply and considering the real impact, including on animal rights 🐄🐦🐎.

📖 A must-read to think outside the box about justice, democracy, and animal advocacy 🐑.

icareanimals.bsky.social
This insightful paper by Friderike Spang argues that deliberative activism can change minds, counter ideological dominance, and protect the movement’s reputation. ➡️ But only if rooted in recognition and respect for the persons participating in the deliberation.
icareanimals.bsky.social
🦉 Bibliography Recommendation 📚

Should animal rights activism move beyond protests and boycotts into deliberative dialogue? 🤔🐾
icareanimals.bsky.social
💡Next time you hear the word 'sanctuary,' ask yourself:

Is this place truly prioritising the animals' interests? Does it avoid breeding, trade, and any form of exploitation?

🐝 How can we better support sanctuaries in shaping a future free from animal exploitation? Let us know your thoughts! 💬
icareanimals.bsky.social
Legitimate sanctuaries may follow strict standards or seek accreditation, but resources vary. What matters most is prioritising the animals' well-being and interests over profit.
icareanimals.bsky.social
🚫 What a sanctuary is not:

It is not a zoo, circus, or tourist attraction. Public access, if any, is carefully managed to minimise stress.
