⚖️ Judges relied on existing texts — article 1240 of the Civil Code on reparation and the 2015 sentience clause (article 515-14) — echoing how French law already repairs ecological harm to nature itself.

Now, similar unreported rulings in Béziers and Rennes suggest the idea is spreading. 🧳

🧑‍⚖️ The story began in Lille, where Maître Graziella Dode argued five landmark cruelty cases between 2024 and 2025. Each time, the court awarded compensation for the animal’s own suffering, from €100 for Lanna, a cat beaten to death, to €1 500 for Buck, a dog stabbed during a domestic dispute.

This emerging idea — called 'préjudice animalier' — recognises that animals themselves can suffer harm deserving legal repair.
It is a distinct category of damages: not for the emotional loss, not for the NGO’s moral harm, but for the animal’s own suffering. ❤️‍🩹

Legitimate sanctuaries may follow strict standards or seek accreditation, but resources vary. What matters most is prioritising the animals' well-being and interests over profit.
