All this is to say: I will mourn Hollywood when it dies. But is there a way to keep the best of it and jettison the worst of it by making a hundred thousand hollyswood? A studio in every community theater, an auteur in every girl scout troop?

I look back at some of my friends that are still in the podcast game, and they've flirted with big money but mostly held onto their own shit, and they've made good lives for themselves and their production companies.

Nobody has leverage over them! I see the same thing in indie journalism, too!

I was in podcasts for fifteen years—much of it indie, some of it pro—and I watched the medium soak up a ton of venture capital, engage in some really time- and capital-intensive projects, and then fall prey to waning investor attention as the limerence wore off.

The future is indie!

I want to fight you on this, but no part of media consolidation over the past two decades pushes against your premise. So I'll concede it.

Right now, Sora is something that can defeat Vine; we can see these astonishing and frequently awful 10-second clips. I can extrapolate from there, sure.

I call this kind of discourse "splash damage"—you think you're flinging invective that will hit only your intended target, but unbeknownst to you, you weren't holding a rock; you were holding a grenade.

It's why I don't like mocking evil people for being fat, for example—that hurts people I love!

I'm in USDA Zone 7 (DC), so we're heading towards possibilities of first frost in the next four or five weeks—which means I gotta get to harvesting, soon!

Not having any idea how the beans would go, I only planted three this year. I anticipate like... a quarter-pound or less of yield, haha

I've kept up a similar bit with my wife for about a decade, too. She swore she'd never get into Steely Dan, and I'd sneak their songs into playlists on long drives. And I'd catch her grooving and go, "pretty smooth, right?"
She'd go, "Is this THE DAN? You gotta fuckin tell me if it's The Dan!"
